A snatch block is nothing more than a pulley

A snatch block is nothing more than a pulley. You attach it to an anchor (tree, etc). Run your winch cable to it, then back to the machine or whatever vehicle the electric wire winch is mounted on. It doubles the length of cable needed to pull, but roughly doubles the mechanical advantage by adding another leg to the pull. EG; straight line will pull 1 foot for each foot of cable. Using a snatch block, for each foot of cable pulled, the machine will move half a foot.
Snatch blocks will save the day if you sink your atv in a hole and get water in the motor, as explained above it reduces the strain on the winch itself so you have less of a chance of draining the battery wile using the winch with the motor off. I also use mine with my plow, I got the snatch block on the plow itself and run the line back to the rack, it allows more precise control of the blade using twice as much cable for the pull, with a strait shot it was a jerky motion. You might not use the snatch block a lot but when you do it sure is nice to have.
